Lothair Irvin Obituary

HAGERSTOWN - Lothair Irvin, 92, passed away Thursday morning, November 2, 2023, at his home on the farm that he loved in rural Hagerstown. The son of the late Everett and Luva (Covalt) Irvin, Lothair was born in Blue River Township, Henry County, Indiana on July 13, 1931. Lothair was raised on a farm and graduated from Hagerstown High School with the class of 1949. He farmed throughout his life while working at Perfect Circle-DANA Corporation as a Design Engineer and retired after forty-three years of service.

In retirement, he and his wife enjoyed many winters in Fort Myers, Florida. Also, driving a school bus for Nettle Creek School Corporation and delivering new buses from the factory to schools brought him joy.

He was engaged in his own children’s activities by umpiring at the Hagerstown Little League, pitching in backyard baseball games, assisting with newspaper routes on snowy days, playing ping pong and teaching them how to build and repair almost anything.

His children will always cherish special moments on the farm where he would celebrate holidays with fireworks at family gatherings. They admire his creativity and how he loved tinkering with electrical and mechanical gadgets including building model airplanes.

Lothair loved the Lord and with his wife Jean, shared Christian magic to teach bible stories to their children’s youth groups and volunteered at the Child Evangelism Fellowship in Missouri. He attends Sovereign Grace Church in New Castle.

Lothair held a private pilot’s license and was a member of the Hagerstown Flying Club and the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association). He enjoyed attending the Oshkosh EAA annual events and air shows with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jean Ann (Hanen) Irvin. They were married in Hagerstown on January 20th, 1962. Four children: Cheryl (Mike) Penticuff, Allan (Mary) Irvin, Kent (Cathy) Irvin, and Mark (Fabia) Irvin; brother in-law, Gene Beeson; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Eloise Beeson.

Public visitation will be from noon until the time of funeral services at 3 p.m. on Monday, November 6th, 2023 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Pastor Marty Holman will officiate. A private graveside ceremony will be held at the Brick Cemetery in Hagerstown.
