John Cain Obituary

John Robert Cain, 79, passed away Friday evening October 23, 2020, at Heritage House of Connersville with his sister, Sarah, by his side. Born February 4, 1941, in Connersville, Indiana, he was the son of H. Francis and Edrie (Williams) Cain. John graduated from Connersville High School and received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Purdue University. He began his teaching career at Centerville, Indiana. At this time the space race with Russia was a high priority for the country and an emphasis was placed on better high school education in mathematics. A nationwide search was conducted to find the best and brightest mathematics teachers to receive scholarships for advanced degrees at the best universities. John was selected with 32 others to attend the University of Notre Dame receiving his master’s degree in mathematics in 1967 and was the only student in this group to be offered a teaching position for one year at Notre Dame which he accepted. John then taught math at Connersville High School until his retirement. He was proud to be named an I Star teacher and for a time was a chess club sponsor. John loved history, did extensive genealogy research, was an early volunteer for the Whitewater Railroad, and a member of Kiwanis. He was married to his beloved wife and best friend, Candy, for 47 years before her death on April 15, 2020. John and Candy were always together and enjoyed the outdoors and nature, puzzles, mind games, hiking, RV and tent camping, and exploring the Smoky Mountains and the Rockies during school breaks.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Candace “Candy” and a great nephew, Alexander Bazzoni.

Survivors include his sister, Sarah (Leon) Bazzoni of North Manchester, IN; a sister-in-law, Constance “Connie” Ferentz of Glendale, WI; one niece, Valerie (Todd) Law of Somerset, IN; 3 nephews, John (Rebecca) Bazzoni of Winona Lake, IN; Michael Bazzoni of Prescott, AZ; and David (Whitney) Bazzoni of Leesburg, IN; a Sister-by- heart, Shahla Fisher, Camarilla, CA and 7 great nephews and nieces, Michael, Brooke, Nicholas, Anna, Eva, Natalie, and Ryan. Without children of his own, John was a proud uncle and loved his nieces and nephews and their children dearly and took great pride in their lives and accomplishments.
