Hazel Huffman Obituary

LEWISVILLE-  Hazel Marie Huffman, 86, passed away Sunday December 8, 2019 at Stonebrooke of New Castle.  A daughter of the late Fred and Goldie (Scott) Mohler, Hazel was born at home in rural Rush County, Indiana on April 16, 1933.  She has lived all her life in the Lewisville community and Henry County.  Hazel was a person who never sat idle.  She was involved in her community of Lewisville through her memberships at the Lewisville Presbyterian Church where she taught at Summer Bible School and in the nursery, she was a past member of the Fair Board, Fire Department, Euchre Club and 2 O’clock Club and worked the election polls. She was voted Lewisville Citizen of the Year and was Grand Marshal of their parade. She had worked at the White Kitchen in Dunreith and Peyton’s Corner Store in Lewisville.  Hazel was mechanically inclined and out of necessity could take apart and fix most things.  She had a sharp memory and was very good with numbers.   Hazel’s door was always open to the town’s children, who knew where they could get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Hazel loved Christmas time, baking and making candy.  She was an avid BINGO player, wrote poetry, did crocheting and ceramics. As she got older and her family continued to grow, Hazel and her late husband “Eck” enjoyed going to their grankids sporting events and cheering them on.

Survivors include 4 daughters, Brenda (Greg) Thompson of Lewisville, Carol (Paul) Huffman of New Lisbon, Kathy (Jerry) Walden of New Castle and Joyce (Jeff) Stewart of Lewisville; 13 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; daughter in-law, Teresa (Witt) Huffman; nieces and nephews.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon Leroy “Eck” Huffman whom she married on August 30, 1950 in New Castle.  He died on November 8, 2006; 3 children, Steve Huffman on November 11, 2015, Sharla Massengale on November 17, 2014 and 8 year old, Jack Huffman on March 4, 1963; 2 great grandsons, Gunner and Solomon Huffman;  5 siblings, Charles, Harold, Fred and Robert Mohler and Donna Gauker.
