STRAUGHN- Gislind E. Pentecost, Ph.D. of Straughn, Indiana, died on May 27, 2022, at the age of 83. She grew up in Vienna, Austria, and came to the United States in 1964. A lifelong student and teacher, she received a BA from Indiana University and a MA and Ph.D. from Purdue University in the field of Foreign Languages and Literature.
After receiving her doctorate, she started teaching German and Latin at the Indiana Academy in 1990 until she retired in 2017. During her time at the Academy, she presented at many conferences, received stipends, and took students on trips abroad. Well-liked by her colleagues and students, she received several awards, including High School Teacher of the Year, Latin Teacher of the Year, and “Most Likely to Have Class During the Apocalypse.”
Outside of her professional activities, she enjoyed watching movies, listening to classical music, reading, swimming, playing games, and spending time with her family and yellow lab Bailey.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Gertrud Pietsch, and sister Ingrid Sims. She is survived by Marvin, her loving husband of 56 years, son Michael, daughters Ingrid Fiedler, Ursula (Jeremy) Saqui, and Veronika (Julian) Benedict, along with her grandchildren Eric, Francesca, Hannah, Nathan, Benji, Joshua, Sydney, Evelyn, David, William, and James. Also, surviving are her siblings Reinhard (Traude) Pietsch, Gerda Daubek, Christopher (Reini) Pietsch, Elfriede Hanak-Hammel.
A private service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a gift to the Dr. Gislind Pentecost Scholarship that will help fund Indiana Academy expenses for high school students.
