Carole Schaekel

HAGERSTOWN-  Margaret Carole Schaekel, 82, passed away at her home in rural Hagerstown early Thursday morning August 12, 2021 with her husband at her side.  A daughter of Guy and Mary E. (Schonfeld) Graham, Carole was born in Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana on June 15, 1939.  She graduated from Shelbyville High School with the class of 1957.  She met her future husband, Floyd, when she was fifteen years old and the two were joined in marriage on June 30, 1957 in Shelbyville.  A homemaker first, Carole was very proud of the family she and her husband started.  She was a devoted wife, mom and grandma.   Formerly of Greenfield, Carole and Floyd were owner/operators of Schaekel Furniture and Carpet for several years. She has been a member of the Hagerstown community since 1976. Along with helping her husband on the farm, she had worked at Wright Way Service in Millville. Carole enjoyed growing her own flowers and was a member of the Hagerstown American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.

            Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Floyd H. Schaekel; 4 children, Mark (Beth) Schaekel, Mike (Lisa) Schaekel, Matt (Susan) Schaekel and Michele (Bill) Smith; 5 grandchildren, Abby, Amanda, Afton, Christian and Patrick; 10 great grandchildren; 2 siblings, Donald Graham and Joyce Green.

            Following cremation at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, a private celebration of  Carole’s life will be held at the Hagerstown American Legion. Her cremains will be laid to rest at Brick Cemetery. Memorial Contributions can be made to Hagerstown Post #333- 615 W. Main Street/ Hagerstown, IN 47346.
