CAMBRIDGE CITY - Welma Jean Hughes, 84, passed away Thursday morning July 19, 2018 at Ambassador Health Care in Centerville, Indiana. Born to the late Goldie (Shepherd) and Ralph Burris in Centerville, Indiana on December 29, 1933, Welma was a lifelong resident of Wayne County and graduate of Lincoln High School. She raised her family in Cambridge City and was an active member of the Cambridge City Church of the Nazarene. Welma enjoyed attending church, singing, cooking, craftwork and her pets. In her leisure, Welma liked sitting on her porch swing and eating chocolate. She worked at Western Union in Richmond at the time of the downtown explosion and retired from Foam Rubber Products in New Castle.

Survivors include 4 children, Jim (Pat) Hughes of Spring,TX, Bonnie (Alan) Suttles of Dublin, Joe Hughes of Cleveland, OH and Tom Weber of Madison; 4 grandchildren, Kamerin McDaniel, Christopher Yoakum, David and Joseph Hughes; 3 great grandchildren, Cleopatra and Hadrain Yoakum and David Hughes; several grand and great grandchildren by heart.

Welma was preceded in death by her stepfather, Herbert Evans; husband, George Francis Hughes; 3 children, Brinda Hughes, George Hughes and Beverly Jo Anderson; 2 sisters, Juanita Dungan and Maxine Fiedler; an infant brother, Billy Burris.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 1 p.m. on Wednesday July 25th at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery in New Castle.
