DUBLIN- Sylvia S. Bates, 74, passed away on Tuesday evening July 27, 2010 at her home in Dublin. A daughter of the late Richard and Viola (Webb) Smith, Sylvia was born in Beattyville, Kentucky on May 1, 1936. She was the valedictorian of her high school class of 1955 in Loveland, Ohio. Sylvia moved from Hamilton, Ohio to the Dublin, Indiana community in 1961. She was an active member of the Dublin Gospel Mission Church where she enjoyed working with the youth group and vacation bible school program. She was also a member of the Do Gooders Club, volunteered at the Dublin Community Club and provided home care for the elderly. Sylvia lived her life by the creed, Thought of the Year- " You make a living by what you get, You make a life by what you give." Survivors include 3 children- Tonda (John) Mears of Felton, Delaware, Dennis J. (Michelle) Bates of New Castle and Mark (Lisa) Bates of Dublin; 12 grandchildren- Logan, Avery (Kelsey),and Broden Mears, Eric (Beth) and Ryan (Jessica) Bates, Carly Holliday, Steven, Mitchell, Ashley, Jessica, Zach and Ben- Ben Bates; 4 great grandchildren- Brayden Mears, Brayden, Addison and Carter Bates. Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband James L. Bates on August 16, 2001. They were married in Liberty, Indiana on May 12, 1956. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at the Flannery Cemetery, Jackson County- McKee, Kentucky.
