Obituary

DUBLIN- Susie Mae Oakes, 87, of Dublin, Indiana, peacefully passed away on Monday, October 19, 2026, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Indiana, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 8, 1938, in Fountain City, Indiana, to her parents, Leon and Mildred Hyre.

Susie was a dedicated mother and loved to spend time and take care of her children. As they were growing up, she became a cook for the Western Wayne School System, that way she could always be there for them. Even after her career in cooking, she loved to cook homemade meals and desserts for her family. She also had a lifelong love for camping, and many fond memories were made during camping trips with her children, grandchildren, and her husband, Norman. Together, Susie and Norman shared 62 years of marriage before his passing in 2018.

In her leisure time, Susie enjoyed sewing and was an avid reader, often being found in the early morning hours reading a good book. She also had a passion for sports, and loved to watch sports of any kind, especially NASCAR and all Indiana teams.

Survivors include her five children, Frank Oakes, Carl Oakes, Doug (Lisa) Oakes, Laura (Jeff) Arnold, and Janet (Mike) Suttles; nine grandchildren, Frankie Oakes, Shawn (Bob) Hoelscher, Stephanie (Tom) Painter, Matthew (Ann) Oakes, Adam (Tiffany) Oakes, Ethan Oakes, Dylan Arnold, Courtney (Ryan) Tillery, and Brandon Suttles; many great-grandchildren; as well as her brother, Clarence Hyre.

Besides her loving husband, Norman Oakes Sr., Susie is preceded in death by her parents; and her four siblings, Leon Hyre, Joe Hyre, Duane Hyre, and Mary Thurston.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday October 23, 2026 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Pastor Steve Cox will officiate. Burial will follow at the South Lawn Cemetery, Dublin. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday October 22nd.
