Dublin- Stuart C. Shipman, 98, passed away on Tuesday evening October 20, 2009 at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Indiana. A son of the late C. P. Shipman and Stella Sipe Shipman, Stuart was born in Bucyrus, Ohio on December 12, 1910. He graduated with the class of 1929 from Edison High School in Morrow County, Ohio. He received a Graduate in Pedagogy in 1931 from Ohio Northern University- Ada, Ohio. Stuart taught for three years in a one - room rural school in Congress Township- Morrow County, Ohio before accepting a teaching position and elementary principalship at Marion, Ohio while completing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Ohio State University in 1937. He was a member of Kappa Kappa Psi- Honorary Band Fraternity at O.N.U. and Kappa Phi Kappa- National Education Fraternity at Ohio State. Stuart married the former Martha Mautz on July 31, 1938 and was drafted in June of 1942. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the infantry at Fort Benning, Georgia in February of 1943. Landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, a First Lieutenant in Company "G"/ 328th Infantry / 26th Division Third Army. He participated in four campaigns and received his Captain's Bars during the Battle of the Bulge and ended up at the end of the conflict in Valachovo Brezi, Czechoslovakia with four Battle Stars and the Bronze Star. He was seperated from service at Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania on New Years Eve 1945. Following his Honorable Discharge, Stuart returned as Elementary Principal at Marion, Ohio and completed his Master Degree in School Administration at Ohio State in 1947. In August of the same year he became Principal and Sixth Grade Teacher at Central Grade School in Cambridge City, Indiana and two years later became Superintendent of Schools for twenty two years in the Western Wayne Community. In 1971 Stuart was honored by the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents for serving twenty or more years in the same position. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Richmond, Indiana and served on several church committees. He was also a member of the LeRoy Tout American Legion Post 338, Dublin, Indiana. Survivors include 1 daughter, Miriam Lydia (Roger) Zimmer of Cambridge City; 1 grandson, Andrew Geoffrey Zimmer; several cousins. Stuart was preceded in death by his wife Martha on November 24, 2002. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m on October 27, 2009 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rev. Daniel Nugent will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Cambridge City. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on October 25, 2009 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin and 1 hour prior to the services at the church.
