MILTON- Roger Jesse Smith, 86, passed away on Wednesday morning May 22, 2013 at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Indiana. A son of the late Walter G. and Ethel (Amburn) Smith, Roger was born in Amelia, Virginia on July 26, 1926. He was a graduate of Beulah High School in Mt. Airy, North Carolina. Formerly of Columbus, Indiana, Roger has made his home in Milton since 1981. His first job was in a saw mill and he retired from Liquid Transport in Indianapolis after 25 years of service as a truck driver. Roger was a gifted musician. He played the fiddle and banjo for several bluegrass bands such as the Bill Monroe Band, The Kentucky Gentlemen and Stoney Lonesome. For over 30 years he has given private music lessons for the guitar, mandolin, banjo and fiddle. He was a member of the Milton Masonic Lodge and the Connersville Baptist Temple. Survivors include his wife, the former Alice (Willis) Bryant. They were married in Jellico, Tennessee on December 30, 1982. 3 daughters, Marien Miller of Kernersville, NC, Diana (Bill) Lakes of New Paris, OH and Sandra (Mark) DeRegnaucourt of Cambridge City; 2 grandsons, Matthew and Joseph DeRegnaucourt; 1 brother, Paige (Dot) Smith of Mt. Airy, NC; 1 sister, Faye (Jim) Scott of Richmond, VA; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Roger was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Warren G., Haywood and Grey Smith. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. on Tuesday May 28, 2013 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Pastor Tim Billups will officiate. Burial will follow at the Westside Cemetery in Milton. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. on Monday May 27 and prior to the services on Tuesday at the funeral home.
