Pershing: Orland "ROCKY" Gartrell, 81, of Pershing, passed away Wednesday October 21, 2009 at the Veterans Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He was born on December 2, 1927 in Dayton, Ohio the son of Carroll and Nan (Pardue) Gartrell. On March 11, 1957 in Mississippi, Rocky married Joyce Hawkins whom survives him. Rocky has lived in the community for over 22 years, moving here from Florida. He retired from the Greyhound bus company after 30 years of service being a bus driver. Rocky was an avid bass fisherman and was a proffesional bass fisherman guide in Florida. He was a former charter member of the Whitewater Valley Bass Masters of Richmond. Rocky served his country during WWII in the Navy and again in Korea in the Marines. Surviving relatives include wife of 52 years, Joyce (Hawkins) Gartrell of Pershing, 3 sons; Jim Smith (wife Kris) of Atlantic, Iowa, Brett Gartrell of Pershing and Mark Gartrell of Milton, daughter; Cheryl Gunderman of Fishers, 8 grandchildren; Sarah Molher (husband Jessie), Shane Gartrell, Krista Barrett (husband Scott), Melissa Gartrell, Tiffany Sanches (husband Burnie), Tyler Lakes (Amber), Trevor Gartrell and Molly Gartrell, 10 great-grandchildren, sister; Delia Hays (husband Harold) of Richmond, sister-in-law; Marie Gartrell of Eaton, OH and several nieces, nephews, couison and friends. Preceded in death by, parents and brother Rodney Gartrell. Services will be at 7:00 p.m. on Monday October 26, 2009 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, with Dr. Darrell Kipler officating the service. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday October 26, 2009 at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow at later time at the National Cemetery in Dayton, OH. In lieu of flowers please make memorials to the family of Rocky Gartrell.
