Obituary

LEWISVILLE- Opal M. (Stephens) Lewman, 92 On February 15, 2017, long time Lewisville resident, Opal M. Lewman passed peacefully away at home. Born, April 1, 1924, to Andrew and Elizabeth (Roe) Stephens, she was the eighth of nine children. Opal attended and graduated from Lewisville High School in 1942 and married the late L. Elmo Lewman on Dec. 24, 1944. Opal was a kind and caring woman, a hard working farm wife and loving mother. She was an avid gardener, known for her huge gardens and for many years, her strawberry patch. She could tell you everything and anything you needed or wanted to know about plants, trees, flowers or weeds. She had a special way with animals she raised or rescued, most remembered were two orphaned crows, Charlie and Bozo, a goose named Bob and Petunia Pig. She loved horses most of all and rode for many years. Opal worked on the farm, at the New Hope Nursing Home and retired from the New Castle Developmental Center after 20 years of service. She is survived by daughters, Gloria (Frank) Bowling and Faith Groce from New Castle, son and caregiver, Stephen Lewman; sister, Ruby Docker of New Castle; grandchildren, Andrew (Teresa) Chew of New Castle, Kristi (Mike) Clarkson of Connersville, Scott (Karl) Bowling of Anderson, Shawn (Steve) Thurston of Sulphur Springs, Anessa (Jeremy) Meadows of San Antonio, TX, Zackariah Medford of Muncie, Jason (Heather) Groce of Spiceland, Amber (Adam) Chambers of Indianapolis, John (Angela) Lewman of Bellvue, NE, Zachary Lewman of New Castle; great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding her in death along with parents and husband are brothers, George Masters, Willie Masters, Otto Stephens, Homer Stephens; sisters, Bertha La Fontain, Mary Helms, Donna Oler; son in-law, Herman Groce, Jr. and an infant grandson. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of funeral services at 1 p.m. on Monday February 20, 2017 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Lewisville Chapel. Rev. Arthur Whitaker will officiate. Burial will follow at the Lewisville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Henry County Animal Shelter- 11 Midway Drive / New Castle, Indiana 47362 would be preferred.
