Matthew Patrick
Gentry
March 17, 1971 – May 31, 2026
Matthew P. Gentry, age 55, passed away at his home on Saturday, May 30th, 2026, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Matt was born in Richmond, IN, on March 17th, 1971, to Nichole (Thalls) Sexton and David Gentry. Matt grew up and lived in Hagerstown, IN and graduated with the class of 1989. He worked in the maintenance department of Hagerstown Jr.- Sr. High School and took great pride in his job at his beloved Alma Mater.
Matt's life centered around his love for music, starting with a passion for playing the drums. He was a self-taught musician and had also learned to play keyboards and guitar, but his love for drums overruled every other instrument. Matt loved all genres of music, especially classic rock. His biggest influences were Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Rush, Jimi Hendrix, and his favorite band, The Who. He saw them countless times over the years as well as many other bands. If you knew Matt, you were either talking about music, listening to music, or playing music with him. It was the soul of who he was. He was also a lifelong Raiders fan and a UFC fan. He had a quick wit and a dry sense of humor and was just an easy-going, laid-back guy. He had a great love for his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
Matt is survived by his son Jeremy and his wife Kelsea, his grandchildren Xander, Annabelle, Amelia, Raylynn and Russell, stepfather Glen (Cricket) Sexton and wife Karen, his sisters Dana (James) Riggs, and Erika (Brian) Miller, nephews Mitchell (Stephanie) Miller, Reggie (Kassie) Miller, great nephew Conrad Miller, step-nephews Nathan Riggs and Ryan Riggs, and numerous cousins.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, maternal grandparents Jackie and Edna Mae Thalls, paternal grandparents Earl and Lucille Gentry, special Uncle Jack Thalls, and step-nephew Jamen Riggs.
Per Matt's request, a graveside service was held at the family's convenience.
