HAGERSTOWN- Mary Ruth Manis, 73 passed away Tuesday morning March 21, 2017 at her home in Hagerstown while surrounded by her loving family. A daughter of the late J.P. and Maxie (Chestnut) Nicholson, Mary was born in Greenmount, Laurel County, Kentucky on January 1, 1944. Mary graduated from Hazel Green High School in East Bernstadt, Kentucky and attended Eastern Kentucky University. She married Roy Manis on July 1, 1963 in Lenoir City, Tennessee. The newlyweds moved to Dublin, Indiana in 1963 and made their home there until moving to Hagerstown in 1995. A homemaker, Mary also helped operate the family business, Roy's Refuse, from 1970 – 1985. Mary was a lifelong "learner". She taught herself how to graft trees, enjoyed gardening and spending time outdoors, playing cards with her friends and was well known for her cooking. It was said that you could never "just run into Mary" (plan on spending an hour !). She was an avid U.K. basketball fan.
Survivors include 3 daughters, Myra Burns, Regina (Brian) Fields and Rebecca (Brent) Shaffer all of Hagerstown; 9 grandchildren, Gabriel, Grayson, Kesiah, Rachel, Brittiney, Colleen, Guy, Reed and Grant; 8 great grandchildren; 3 siblings, Lena Cornett, Imogene Links and Harry Nicholson; a special sister in-law, Cricket Nicholson; nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lynn Manis on March 4, 2007; 2 siblings, Herbert Nicholson and Lettie Brown.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until the time of services at 6 p.m. on Friday March 24th at New Testament Church of Christ - 752 W. Main St./ Hagerstown, IN 47346. Pastor Paul Gerhart will officiate. An informal Committal Service (dress casually) will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday March 25th at Zion's Lutheran Cemetery in Pershing.
