NEW CASTLE - Kathleen Leakey, 97, of Straughn passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at Glen Oaks Health Campus, New Castle. Kathleen was born in Randolph County on May 20, 1915 to Herschel and Mabel Shaffer Puckett. She graduated from Modoc High School in 1933. Kathleen was a member of New Lisbon Christian Church and recently attended Salem United Methodist Church in Straughn. Kathleen married James Leakey on March 30, 1941. They lived in Muncie for thirteen months before James was called into service. She moved back to New Lisbon and lived with her folks until James was discharged from service. When James returned home they bought the Puckett Locker and Slaughter House near Straughn and operated it for fourteen years before selling it to Rihms. Kathleen then worked at Audree's Dress Shop in Cambridge City for twenty-two years before her retirement. She enjoyed making quilts, crafts, cooking and traveling. James and Kathleen traveled to Europe four times, across Canada, and all the states but two. Kathleen is preceded in death by her parents, husband August 1986 and a brother, Howard Puckett. Survivors include a niece, Janice (Bill) Longnecker of Cambridge City; a nephew, John Puckett of Dublin; a cousin Beth (Dick) Hall of Muncie; several great-nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ron & Linda Chew of Straughn, and Raymond & Thelma Chew of Straughn. Memorial contributions may be made to South Henry Dollars for Scholarships, Tri High School, Straughn, Indiana 47387. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Rev. Jeff Blansett will officiate. Burial will follow at New Lisbon Cemetery in New Lisbon. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
