July 8, 1931 – July 2, 2016
HAGERSTOWN- John E. Grubbs, 84, passed away Saturday morning July 2, 2016 at Heritage House in New Castle, Indiana. A son of the late Ernest and Lelia (Phenis) Grubbs, John was born in near Modoc in Randolph County, Indiana on July 8, 1931. He graduated from Jacksonburg High School and has lived his entire life in the Jacksonburg and Hagerstown communities. John was a patriot, he served his country as a corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following the war he remained active in caring for the needs of fellow veterans by transporting them to appointments visiting them in nursing homes, delivering care packages and by his memberships in several veterans organizations. John served on the Veterans Council and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars- New Castle Post 1282, AMVETS Post 11 and Hagerstown American Legion Post 333. At Post 333 John had served as Post Commander, Historian and Finance Officer. John received the State of Indiana Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his community service to veterans. John retired from Perfect Circle in Hagerstown where he worked as a millwright. He was also a member of the U.A. W. and in his leisure, enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, gardening and talking on the C.B. radio (handle, "Tin Bender"). He was a member of the Jacksonburg Christian Church. Survivors include 2 children, Dan Grubbs of Havelock, N. Carolina and Gloria (Bart) Bicknell of Milton; grandchildren, Gabriel and Pam Grubbs of Los Angeles, CA, Celestial Soden of New Bern, NC, Ross (Melissa) Lane of Greensburg, Khrystal Bicknell of Greenwood, Jessica (Colt) Bradley of Woodward, OK and Crystal LaGuera of Texas; 12 great grandchildren; 3 siblings, Rex (Anne) Grubbs of Richmond, Carol Grubbs of Aurora and Beverly Smith of Venice, FL; nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by2 sons, Timothy Grubbs on August 7, 2002 and Tracy Grubbs on November 9, 1980; 1st wife and mother of his children, the former Phyllis J. Glisson and his 2nd wife Eleanor Harvey; 2 sisters, Barbara Zook and Vivian Jarrett; 1 brother, David Grubbs. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday July 5 with funeral services at 1 p.m. on Wednesday July 6, 2016 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Pastor Stan Eastman will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at the Jacksonburg Cemetery.
