Obituary

Lewisville- John C. Burge, 82, passed away Saturday afternoon January 28, 2017 at his home in rural Lewisville while surrounded by his loving family. A son of the late John Ora and Thelma (Pheiffer) Burge, John was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 6, 1934. He and his family moved to Rush County and the Raleigh area when he was a young boy. John graduated from Raleigh High School with the class of 1953 where he played basketball and baseball. He served 7 years in the United States Army Reserves. John married the former Coralyn McBride on April 30, 1955 at the Raleigh Christian Church. Following their marriage, the couple moved north of Raleigh to the McBride family farm where they continued the farming operation, raising hogs, cattle and grain. John enjoyed being outdoors and loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an Elder at the Centerville Christian Church for over 20 years and in his leisure enjoyed fishing, NASCAR racing and watching baseball and college basketball. John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Coralyn Burge; 2 sons, John Scott (Kathy) Burge of Carthage and Brett Wayne (companion, Marie Godar) Burge of Rushville; 4 grandchildren, Andy (Mandy) Burge of Connersville, Jennifer (Michael) McCallister of Arlington, Casey (Robert) Frye of Connersville and Heather Burge of Knightstown; 14 great grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; 1 brother, Richard (Connie) Burge of Rushville; daughter in-law, Debbie Burge; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion, Jake. John was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Christy Volz and a sister, Phyllis Pond. Visitation will be from noon until the time of a Celebration of Life Service at 3 p.m. on Sunday February 5, 2017 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Lewisville Chapel. Pastor Terry Cochran of the Centerville Christian Church will officiate. Burial will be made at a later date in the Raleigh Zion Cemetery.
