Obituary

CAMBRIDGE CITY- James C. "Jim" Brower, 82 passed away Monday evening February 22, 2016 at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Indiana. Jim was born in Cambridge City, Indiana on April 26, 1933. He was a graduate of Straughn High School with the class of 1951 and attended Indiana University in Bloomington. A lifelong resident of Henry and Wayne Counties, Jim and his wife Joyce enjoyed traveling all over the world. Jim was a Landscape Architect and co-owner of Brower's Gaar Nursery. His passion was for designing rock gardens but also received two National Landscape Awards in 1974, recognizing his design for the Richmond Promenade, which were presented to him at the White House by President Richard Nixon. He also was the landscape designer for the Richmond Square Mall. Jim held the offices of President and Governor for the Indiana Association of Nurserymen, served on the board of directors for the Reid Hospital Foundation, Reid Hospital Board of Directors, the Palladium Item Editorial Board, and the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. In his leisure, Jim enjoyed spending time at Tippecanoe Lake with his family and friends and was an avid walker. He received a plaque for his achievement of walking barefoot 6,000 miles on Manasota Key, Florida. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge #5 F& AM. Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Joyce Gift, whom he married on March 19, 1955 in North Webster, Indiana. 3 children, Mike (April) Brower, Valorie (Brian) Cutler and Steven (Linda) Brower; 6 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 1 brother, Rodney Brower of Cambridge City; 1 sister, Aletha Foster of Chicago; nieces and nephews Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Aletha Evelyn (Gaar) Brower on January 21, 1994; father, Campbell S. Brower on January 3, 1995; and nephew David Allan Brower on February 12, 1975. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday February 28, 2016 at the Cambridge City Christian Church, 106 W. Church Street- Cambridge City, IN 47327. Masonic services conducted by Lodge #5 F& AM will follow. Private funeral services will be held on Monday February 29, 2016 with family friend Ernie Alder delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Cambridge City.
