Obituary

CAMBRIDGE CITY- Gordon R. "Gordy" Rayburn, 87, passed away on Friday April 5, 2013 at the Dayton V.A. Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. A son of the late William Arvin and Maggie Lee (Garner) Rayburn, Gordon was born in Albany, Kentucky on March 14, 1926. Gordon earned his High School Diploma 2 years ago from Tri High School through a special program for veterans. Gordon had lived in Milton and Straughn before moving to Cambridge City 4 years ago. Gordon served his country in the United States Marine Corp during World War II. He participated in action against the enemy on Iwo Jima and the Volcano Islands and also participated in the Occupation of Japan. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal on July 17, 1946. Gordon was an active Lifetime member of the Lawrence H. Bertsch Amrican Legion Post 169 in Cambridge City where he held many offices and donated a lot of his time over the years. He looked forward in marching in the Canal Days parade every year. He also served as past 10th District Commander 1986-87 and past Department Sergeant at Arms 1996-97. Gordon was also a life member of the New Castle V.F. W. and the 40 & 8 in Connersville. Gordon loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, gardening, being outdoors, boating and water skiing. Gordon worked as a welder at Converto in Cambridge City and retired in 1986 after more than 30 years of service. Survivors include his wife, the former Carolyn S. Moistner. They were married in Connersville on August 29, 1976. 7 children, Grey Rayburn of Lewisville, Becki Reed of Connersville, Eddie (Amy) Herbert of Morristown, CO, Susan (Doug) Dixon of New Paris, OH, Sandi (Merle) DeBruler of Cambridge City, Eric (Diane) Triplett of LaLuz, New Mexico, Bobby (Megan) Rayburn of Spiceland; 13 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Reba Brauner of Albany, KY; special niece Jackie (Bill) Ray of Middletown; special nephews, Paul (Becky) and Bill (Linda) Rayburn of Albany, KY. Gordon was preceded in death by 1 brother, Howard Rayburn and son inlaw Gary Reed. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday April 10, 2013 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Post 169 Chaplain, Larry McDaniel will officiate. Burial will follow at the Westside Cemetery in Milton. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday April 9 at the funeral home.
