George W. Pierce died peacefully at home early Sunday morning, June 9, 2013. He was born February 23, 1929, the fourth of twelve children of Millard Sherman Pierce and Arrow Minnis York Pierce. Mr. Pierce was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Westover Pierce in June 2002; siblings Sarah Rubena Collins of Richmond, VA; Raymond of Indianapolis; Leland of Richmond, IN; and Ron (Mary) of New Castle. Surviving him are his wife of eight years, Carolyn Yager McCoy and her children, Mark (Kathy) of New Castle; Duane (Nola) of Greenwood; Diana Stanton (Ed) of Flowery Branch, GA; and Sean of Spiceland; Mr. Pierce's son, Darryl G. (Sharon) of Straughn and daughter Marilyn Miller of Acworth, GA; siblings Frank (Robin) of Brownsburg; Wanda Stevens (Kenny), Dale (Dona), and Cecil (Jan) of Greencastle; Barbara Bustle (Gerald) and Tim (Barb) of New Castle; and Steve (Carman); three granddaughters, Nicole Thomas (Danny) of Muncie; Donelle Carrico (Jeff) of Hagerstown; and Lillian Dailey Miller of Acworth, GA; many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A surviving cousin, Haskell Blackburn (Joanne) lives outside Cambridge City. Mr. Pierce was graduated from Straughn High School in 1946, playing basketball all four years. Though he was offered a small basketball scholarship from Taylor University, he regretted never attending college. He worked for local farmers, helped pave U.S. 40, and drove trucks of hay and straw before marrying Dorothy Westover, Oct. 11, 1950. Within six months, he was drafted into the Army and served in Korea as company clerk when his son was born. Upon return, he worked briefly for Modernfold Products before moving south of Straughn, early in 1957, to help his in-laws on their farm. He remained on the property the rest of his life, enlarging and changing the scope from an old-fashioned multi-use farm to a large modern dairy. In fact, Pierces were Miller Milk's largest dairy provider in the latter years of the corporation's existence. He was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, just a mile from his farm and its steeple within view. Though he was in his 50s before he was baptized, he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher for several years after retirement. His faith was very important to him, beginning each day by reading the Bible and often watching Billy Graham re-runs at night. He loved the land and animals, many sports, little children, and talking with and caring about people. He ran into Straughn H.S. alumni Carolyn McCoy after a basketball game fall 2005, and they married August 4, 2006. They enjoyed traveling, attending church, and eating out with friends. Carolyn's family became part of George's family. He enjoyed learning and reading; he often ended prayers by asking God to help him to look forward, not back. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery. Rev. Peter Zinn and Rev. Arthur Whitaker will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin.
