Gary Robert Griffin, 87, of Cambridge City, Indiana, died peacefully Monday evening, April 20, 2026.
Gary was born to Robert and Francis (Sharp) Griffin on November 4, 1938, in New Castle, Indiana, and raised in Cambridge City. Gary was an only child who enjoyed all sports, lettering 4 years in basketball, and 3 years in football at Lincoln High School in Cambridge City where he graduated in 1956. After high school, Gary decided to serve his country, enlisting in the Air Force, where he became a teletype operator and was stationed in Formosa (Taiwan). Following his honorable discharge, Gary returned to Indiana where he enrolled at Indiana University, Indianapolis studying accounting and business management for two years. He retired after a successful career in finance and accounting in Indianapolis.
Gary met and married his wife Shirley (Koehler) Griffin and together they raised 5 children David (Donna) Griffin, Dale (Christina) Griffin, Dane (Denise) Griffin, Dean (Claudia) Griffin, and Diane (Earl) Stamatkin. They were all Purdue graduates, which made it very interesting when Purdue and Indiana played as Gary was an avid IU basketball and Coach Knight fan.
In his leisure time, Gary loved to landscape and garden. At their home in Rockville, Indiana he had an elaborate garden with walking paths lined with various flowers, bushes and statuary. He had a continuous war with the deer trying to keep them from eating his flowers and shrubs. After Shirley passed in 2006, he continued his landscaping passion. He enjoyed landscaping the house of his partner in Cambridge City where the house with the “fountain out front” was on display with all the flowers, bushes and statuary.
Survivors include his 5 children; 9 grandchildren, Darcy Finchum, David Griffin, Brian Griffin, Sarah Griffin, Jill Ringel, and Chad Griffin, Koehler Graves, Klayton Griffin, Korbin Griffin and 13 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Griffin; granddaughter, Danielle Griffin; son-in-law, Earl Stamatkin; and his partner, Charlene Ann “Soozi” Worley.
Per Gary’s wishes, there will be no viewing or memorial service.
