Obituary

Gary Owen Davis, 73, of Cambridge City, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, surrounded by family.

Gary was born on November 9, 1952, in Richmond and was raised in the rural communities of Milton and Cambridge City, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for hard work, open land, and the quiet rhythms of a hands-on life.

He was a machine maintenance repairman and skilled tradesman by profession, retiring from Intat Precision, Inc. in Rushville. Gary was known for his reliability, mechanical skill, and pride in doing things the right way. He believed in fixing what could be repaired, building what was needed, and showing care through action rather than words.

Gary enjoyed traveling and exploring the country, collecting stories and experiences along the way. At home, he found peace in simple and meaningful things: tending his gardens, working in his woodshop, spending time outdoors, and caring deeply for animals and nature.

Affectionately known as “Gabby” since childhood—a nickname earned on the baseball field at age eight because he could not stop talking in the outfield—he carried that warmth and gift for conversation throughout his life.

He married Mary Elizabeth Davis (“Beth”) in 1979, and together they shared many years of marriage and family life, including time spent living in Philomath, until her passing in 2013. Gary later shared companionship with his longtime partner, Marsha, beginning in 2014.

Gary is survived by his daughters, Gabrielle Davis and Amber Wise; and his grandchildren: Canyon, Celeste, and William (children of Gabrielle); Silas (son of Amber and her husband Brad); Abigail (daughter of stepdaughter Melissa Rodefer and her husband Andy); and Vinton and Lane (sons of stepdaughter Randi James). He is also survived by his stepdaughters, Melissa Rodefer and Randi James, and their families; his longtime partner, Marsha, and her family; his siblings Sharon and Tim; as well as many extended family members, friends, and loved ones whose lives were touched by his steady presence, humor, and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell Davis and Lois Davis; his wife, Mary Elizabeth Davis (“Beth”); and his brothers Ronnie and Randy.

Gary’s life was rooted in craftsmanship, patience, resilience, and quiet strength. He will be remembered for the things he built, the gardens he tended, the stories he told, and the love he gave to those around him.

A private graveside service will be held for the family. A celebration of life will be planned for the summer. No public visitation or funeral services are scheduled at this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages others to spend time outdoors, plant something meaningful, or lend a helping hand to someone in need in Gary’s memory.
