Ellen E. Hickman, 100 years old, of Lewisville, went to her heavenly home on April 3, 2025 surrounded by her family. She was at Springhurst Health Campus in Greenfield, Indiana.
Ellen was born June 6, 1924 in Fentress County, Tennessee along the Wolf River, to James W. and Rena Jane (Jones) Turner. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Fredrick Hickman Jr., younger brother, Hughes Turner, her sisters, Nancy M. Upchurch and Opal C. Brock, grandson, Johnathan C. Strong, and 2 great grandsons, Joel Engle and Ezra Henderson. Ellen moved with her family to New Castle and was enrolled in New Castle school system. Unfortunately, she had to drop out a few years later to take care of her sisters after her mother had passed away. She went on to work at Chrysler in New Castle making supplies for the military during war times. Ellen later married the love of her life Fredrick Hickman Jr. on March 16th, 1946. Ellen was a wife, sister, mother, and homemaker most of her life. She also worked at times at the Lewisville nursing home, Lewisville Hotel, Lewisville Town Office Clerk, Walmart door greeter, and her favorite of all Tri Elementary for the Foster Grandparents Program. In 1989 Ellen did return to school and receive her GED as well as holding the role of Class Speaker at the age of 65.
Left to cherish her loving memory are her 7 children and their spouses, John L. and Connie Hickman of Spokane, WA, Mike and the late Suzane Hickman of Laytonville, CA, Susan and Roger Engle of Knightstown, IN, Fred and Anne Hickman of Arlington, IN, Bruce and Margo Hickman of Fortville, IN, Garry and Deloris Hickman of Rushville, IN, Nancy and John Strong of Spiceland, IN; Her 16 grandchildren and their spouses. Nathan/Amy Hickman, Jessica/Abe Henderson, Seth/Sarah Hickman, Greg/Beth Engle, Brian/Molli Engle, Steven/Lori Engle, Stacey/Rob Weihe, Chris/Stacey Hickman, Andy/Laura Hickman, Jeremy Hickman, Heather/Chad Hartman, Stephanie/Jeff Ellenwood, Christi/Jeff Kincade, Cathy/Jordan Chew, Aaron/Treva Hickman, Amanda/Jim Draper, and Holly/Michael Huston; Her 51 great grandchildren and her 1st great-great grandchild with another one on the way. What, did you think this would be short after a century of life?
Services will be held at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025. Visitation will begin at 11 o'clock and continue until service at 1pm. Burial will be at Lewisville Cemetery. Family and friends can gather at Lewisville Shelter house following the burial.
