LEWISVILLE - Dwight Alva Sweet, Lt Col, USAF (Retired), 75, of rural Lewisville, died Monday, April 15, 2013, at home after an extended illness. Dwight was born February 10, 1938, in Connersville, Indiana, the only child of Guy Henry and Avanell (Poer) Sweet. On August 27, 1960, he married Ruth Louise Ryman. After graduation from Ball State Teacher's College in 1963, Dwight entered the United States Air Force as a pilot. He was a Vietnam veteran and served with the Royal Air Force as an exchange pilot. During his career, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, numerous Air Medals, the Republic of Vietnam Service medal, the Chief of Staff Individual Safety Award from the Department of the Air Force, and other decorations. After retiring in 1983, he returned to farming in Rush County. He was a former President of Rush County Farm Bureau, Inc. and the Lewisville Lions Club. He also served as Rush County Commissioner, member of the Rush Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, and as an Elder in the Lewisville Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Connersville High School graduating class of 1956. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Louise Sweet, son David (Linda) Sweet of Lewisville, daughter Deborah (Bryan) Hummel of Lewisville, son Richard Sweet of Springville, and grandchildren Nathan Hummel, Joshua Hummel, Lucas Hummel, Cole Sweet, and Peyton Sweet. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Dwight's life at 5:00 pm on Sunday, April 21, 2013, during a memorial service with military honors in the Lewisville Presbyterian Church sanctuary in Lewisville, Indiana, with Reverend Peter Zinn officiating. Visitation with the family will begin at 4:00 pm, an hour before the service, in the Fellowship Hall. A private burial will be held at the family's discretion at Ebenezer Cemetery in Rush County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lewisville Presbyterian Church, cancer relief fund Brian's Cause via Rush Memorial Hospital Foundation, or the Hospice of South Central Indiana; envelopes will be available at the church.
