CAMBRIDGE CITY- Donald Jay Hassler, loving father, brother and friend to all, passed away on Saturday, November 17, 2012. Donald was born on August 14, 1929 in Connersville to the late Harold E. and Ethel M. Hassler. Don lived most of his life in Connersville calling Cambridge City his home in recent years. Don proudly served as a Corporal in the Army during the Korean Conflict. After returning home, Don worked in the family business at Stant Manufacturing. Don and his older brother, Bob started the NAPA Store in Connersville. Loving and caring for animals his entire life led Don to own and operate Running Bear Kennels on a farm in Harrisburg for many years. One of Don's proudest endeavors was the Hannah House Restaurant on the Brookville Lake which he owned and operated with his former wife, Hazel Hassler. In the last years, Don and his loving partner Helen were familiar faces at the local flea markets selling food from their Nifty Food Truck. Many wonderful weekends were spent serving food also at the area airports for the sky divers. He loved aviation, sky diving and many of the sky divers thought of Don as his friend. Don was a gifted carpenter and his craftsmanship will always be cherished. Don was a member of the American Legion post 169. Don is survived by his loving partner and companion, Helen Purcell, his former wife, Hazel Hassler, five children and their spouses: Connie Markowitz, Barbara Sims, Angela Rihm, Eric Hassler and Donna Hudson, as well as Helen's children Ronald Purcell, Debbie Frye and Donna Narvell. He was a proud grandfather to 24 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Robert Hassler. Don was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Justin Blodgett. No funeral services are planned at this time.
