NEW CASTLE - Dona Joan Shafer, 87, of New Castle, died Thursday evening, June 14, 2012, at Glen Oaks Health Campus. Dona was born on November 28, 1924 in Henry County, Indiana to Arthur and Norma (Raffensberger) Fowler and is a 1942 graduate of New Lisbon High School. After farming for many years in the New Lisbon area with her husband, Daniel B. Shafer, they retired to Florida for several years and returned to the Cambridge City area prior to moving to New Castle. She enjoyed raising her grandchildren and spreading the Gospel in song by playing the piano and singing with her husband. Avid song evangilists, they traveled as missionaries throughout the midwest and abroad. Dona is survied by her husband, Daniel B. Shafer, whom she married January 27, 1946 in New Lisbon; two children, Gary Shafer of Cambridge City, Indiana, and Joy Ann Lowder of New Castle, Indiana; four grandchildren, Brooke Miller, Matt and Nathan Shafer, and Brandon Lowder; and twelve great grandchildren. Dona was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Kent Alan Shafer; and a grandson, Kent Allen Miller. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the celebration of Joan's life at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at the New Lisbon Christian Church, 6477 E County Rd 500 S, New Lisbon, Indiana 47366 with Rev. Mark Lomison presiding. Burial will occur at the convenience of the family at the New Lisbon Cemetery. The Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
