Obituary

DUBLIN-  Coleman Harrison Proffitt, 89, passed away Tuesday evening July 15, 2025 at Reid Health in Richmond, Indiana.  Formerly of Dublin, Coleman has made his home in Eaton, Ohio for the past several years.  Coleman was one of ten children born to the late William Harrison and Martha Elizabeth (Hardigree) Proffitt.  He was born in Crab Orchard, Clay County, Kentucky on September 12, 1935 and raised in Paint Lick. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1954-1956 during the Korean War. Coleman was an active sixty-year member of the Lawrence H. Bertsch American Legion Post 169 in Cambridge City and a faithful participant of the Honor Guard.  Coleman moved to Indiana in the 1960's and worked for DANA Corporation in Hagerstown and Richmond as a machinist. He retired in 1995. He owned and operated Coleman's Tasty Freeze in Cambridge City (now Hilltop) for several years.  Coleman enjoyed the outdoors, camping and especially fishing.  He loved spending time with his family, was an awesome grandfather, played the guitar and liked listening to country and western music. He married the former Sandra Sue "Sandy" Brown in Jellico, Tennessee on August 3, 1974. He liked to tell the story of their marriage at the local IGA store in the cabbage aisle while sitting on sacks of potatoes and onions.

Survivors include 5 children, Gary Keith Jones, Tammi Riley, Tia (Mike) Bowling, Colena (Eric) Frame and Necoleia (Brad) Friend; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Coleman was preceded in death by his wife of nearly fifty years, Sandy, on July 27, 2024; son in-law Gary Riley and 9 siblings.

Following cremation, Graveside services with military honors conducted by Post 169 and contingents of the United States Air Force will be held at 10 a.m.  Monday July 21, 2025 at Brick Church Cemetery south of Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions can be made to American Legion Post 169- P.O. Box 172/ Cambridge City, IN 47327.
