NEW CASTLE- Alice Jean Chew, 91, passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 13th, 2023, at Addison Place in New Castle, Indiana. Alice Jean was born in Connersville, Indiana on January 27th, 1932, to the late Clyde and Myrtle (Black) Austin. She grew up in the New Lisbon area and graduated with the class of 1950 from New Lisbon High School. After graduating high school, Alice pursued a degree in nursing from Ball State University School of Nursing. Alice started her nursing career in Norfolk, Virginia, and as she and her first husband, Jack Carroll, moved throughout the country she also worked in locations such as Wichita Falls, Texas; General Rose Hospital in Denver, Colorado and Parkview Hospital in Pueblo, Colorado. Eventually returning to Indiana and working at Reid Hospital in Richmond before retiring from Henry County Hospital in New Castle, after 35 years in nursing. In her leisure time, she and her late husband, Paul Chew, were active with New Lisbon High School reunions. She was very proud of the recognition dinner they organized to honor the World War II veterans of Henry County. She was a supporter of many veteran organizations. She and Paul enjoyed spending the winter months in Palm Shores Village at Lake Alfred in Florida. She was a member of the Centerville Christian Church.
Alice is preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Carroll in 2000; second husband, Dr. Donald Larson in 2021; and third husband, Paul Chew in 2018; and special brother in-laws, Melvin Dick, and Russell Curnutt.
Alice is survived by her two sons, Richard Arlen Carroll of Wisconsin, and Robert Allen Carroll of New Castle; three grandsons, Chad William, Christopher Wayne, and Matthew Richard Carroll; four great-grandchildren, Jordan Carroll, Payten Carroll both of WI; Maddie Carroll, and Kinley Carroll both of Woodstock, VA; one great-great grandson, Cohen Carroll of WI, and one great-great granddaughter on the way.
Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday December 19th, 2023, at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Private Graveside Services will be at New Lisbon Cemetery. Rev. Wes Sewell of the Centerville Christian Church will officiate.
