Hagerstown- William C. "Bill" Waltz, 76, passed away at his home in Hagerstown on Saturday morning, March 7, 2009. A son of the late Ralph H. and Beatrice Hennis Waltz, Bill was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on June 17, 1932. He has lived most of his life in Hagerstown and graduated from high school there in 1950. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and was Honorably Discharged with the rank of sergeant on June 25, 1954. He retired from DANA Corporation in Hagerstown where he worked in Quality Control. Following his retirement he had worked part-time for Mahoney's True Value Hardware, Nettle Creek Ace Hardware and Hartley Hills Country Club. Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church, W.O. Frazier American Legion Post 333 and the Masonic Lodge #49, where he had been a member for 54 years, all of Hagerstown.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 43 years, the former Betty Brumfield. They were married in Richmond, Indiana on March 12, 1966. 3 children- Michael (Missy) Smith of Hagerstown, Mark Smith of New Palestine and Debra (Jason Nicholson) Davis of Richmond; 1 granddaughter, Kathryn Galliher of Hagerstown; step mother, Elenida Waltz Waltz of Hagerstown; 1 brother- Roger Waltz of Milford, Michigan; 3 sisters- Sandy Huddleston of Richmond, Jennifer (Mark) Mendenhall of Economy and Kathleen (Mike) Davis of Fountain City; sister in-law Jo Nell Waltz; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and special friends.
He was preceded in death by 2 brothers- Ralph H. and Dr. Fredric Waltz and a great grandson- Charles Michael Leber.
Following Cremation, a Memorial Service to include Masonic Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday March 10, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, 199 S. Perry Street in Hagerstown. Rev. Sue Cartee will officiate. Burial with military graveside services conducted by the Hagerstown American Legion, will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Hagerstown. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church- P.O. Box 65 / Hagerstown, IN 47346. The Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
