Edgar Eugene “Gene” Isaacs, 86 years old, passed away on April 3, 2024, at St. Vincent Hospital from complications of an accidental injury.
Gene was born September 17, 1937, in Owsley, Kentucky, to Leslie and Hallie (Strong) Isaacs. He married Rita (Humig) Isaacs on May 27,1961; they would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this year. He is survived by his wife, his sister, Sharon (Hobert) Fisher, his four children: Steve (Michelle) Isaacs, Sherry Lowery, Keith (April) Isaacs, and Don (Mary) Isaacs; 10 grandchildren: Joey Isaacs, Dusty Williams, Brandy Blanch, Tarah Lowery, Brandon (Kaylee) Lowery, Jon (Amy) Lowery, Courtney (Aaron) Parrett, Travis (Lindsey) Isaacs, Shaylee McGuire, and Aaron (Taylor) Isaacs; 13 great grandchildren: Kelsey, Katie, Abby, Alyssa, Kaitlyn, Bradon, Michele, Tyler, Clayton, Novalee, Bash, Colton, and Brynlee.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: Everett Herschel, Woodrow, Ronald and Richard, and his sister, Shirley.
He was an avid gardener. Up until a couple of years ago, he planted, weeded, and harvested a family garden for him and Rita as well as their children's families. He loved growing cucumbers and tomatoes, but his favorite items to grow were different kinds of watermelons for the grandchildren and the great grandchildren. He even shared the fruits and vegetables with extended family, friends, and neighbors. Gene was a hardworking man. He worked 32 years at Ford Visteon, where he retired in 1997. He also was in the National Guard. He loved woodworking and working on cars and tractors. Making presents for his family was one of his favorite pastimes. From wagons, workbenches, and doll cradles to intricate grandfather clocks, quilt racks, and bookshelves, he loved seeing the smiles when family and friends received their gifts. He truly had a mechanical mind and could fix anything. If something needed fixed, "Take it to Pappaw!"
There is no doubt that Jesus said to Gene when he arrived in heaven, “You have done well, my good and faithful servant.” He had a heart to care and to provide for others. He loved cooking Sunday meals for his family, baking chocolate chips cookies, and preparing Christmas and Easter dinners too with the biggest ham Rihm's had. He even provided complete care for his wife, Rita, and he did it all with the truest heart and deepest love for his family. In his younger days, Gene loved hunting, fishing, camping, and Sunday dinners at his mother's house for the best fried chicken around. There was not a Western made that Gene had not seen. He loved helping Rita babysit for their grandchildren, going to baseball, softball, football, wrestling, and basketball games to watch their children and grandchildren play. He and Rita loved vacationing to Branson, Missouri, the Badlands, and South Dakota. Together they visited almost all the 50 states; their favorite places were Kentucky, Tennessee, and The Little Nashville Opry. Gene was so proud of his children, Steve, Sherry, Keith, and Don, who certainly took after him, as they are all hardworking people who love, care, and provide for their families. He was also a member of the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.
Visitation for Gene will be from 10 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 12 p.m. on Wednesday April 10th, 2024, at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church 333 W. Maple St. Cambridge City, Indiana 47327. Father John Hall will officiate. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Cambridge City.
